Topless woman assaulted at New Year festival
A woman who was filmed attacking the man who groped her at a music festival has defended her actions, and the outfit she was wearing.
The American-born woman and her friend Kiri-Ann Hatfield followed the man, threw a drink in his face, and proceeded to punch him, Yahoo reports.
Now Anello-Kitzmiller has spoken out to defend her response, claiming that no one has a right to touch her body, regardless of what she chooses to wear.
“I stand by my actions and hope that I’ve inspired women to feel comfortable in their bodies, no matter how they look,” she told Daily Mail Australia.
“He grabbed my breast. I hit him,” she added. “There was a lot of built-up anger coming from harassment throughout the day. This happens everywhere, not just New Zealand.”
“A human’s body is their own, and nobody has a right to touch you without your consent, regardless of what they’re wearing.”
Despite what happened, Anello-Kitzmiller says, the incident didn’t detract from her enjoyment of the event, and she remained topless for the rest of the New Year’s festival
In the video, which has since gone viral, the man follows Anello-Kitzmiller and grabs her breast before running off and taking a seat on the grass.
However, Anello-Kitzmiller and Hatfield chase after him, and Anello-Kitzmiller strikes him several times in the face.
The footage was posted on Facebook by a woman named Giann Reece.
Anello-Kitzmiller says it wasn’t the first time she witnessed harassment at the event, claiming she was abused by both male and female festival bgoers the day before the incident, when she was wearing a T-shirt.
Sexual harassment at festivals has been making headlines of late. Last year, Sweden’s largest music event, Bråvalla, was canceled following a string of sexual-assault and rape complaints.
Organisers of the four-day camping event announced they were canceling the 2018 event after police received four rape and 23 sexual-assault reports at the festival in July.
This has prompted the first-ever women-only music festival.
Swedish comedian Emma Knyckare is organising the “man-free” event, named the Statement Festival.
“Together, we are making a statement against sexual assaults by creating a safe space for women, non-binary, and trans people that want to attend festivals and feel secure at the same time,” the radio host tweeted.
We don’t think this is too much to ask for!”
And just today, a crowdfunding product was announced from a U.S. couple: underwear to help protect women during a sexual assault attack.
The video was viewed more than 200,000 times before it was taken down by Facebook.
“I think there was a lot of built up anger from harassment throughout the day and we were just tired of it … I had to react to it because I wasn’t not going to stand up for myself,” Ms Anello-Kitzmiller told NZ Herald.
The young man who harassed her later apologised after the crowd grew angry, but she says it “wasn’t sincere at all,” as he and his friends laughed.
Ms Anello-Kitzmiller said some of the messages she’s received following the incident have been vile.
“There’s a lot of people saying I deserved it or I was asking for it, but the fact is people should be able to dress however they want … no matter what you wear your body is nobody else’s but your own.”
However she says people also contacted her to say they’d been inspired.
Ms Anello-Kitzmiller, originally from Portland, Oregon said the experience was a “culture shock”, recounting a festival in the US where people ended up “naked, caked in mud and there was no negativity”.
Police spokespeople told NZ Herald they have not received a complaint over the incident.

What an inspiring woman with excellent points about rape culture and open mindedness!
I was banned from Facebook for 24 hours for posting the video which is so ignorant to me! Body shaming is still such a huge problem
