Rajnath Singh meets Topper Nabeel Ahmad Wani, says his success will inspire many in J&K

NEW DELHI: Hearing the surbane “Wani” most of us will connect to the Hizbul commander Burhan Vani , who was executed by the Forces in an encounter, leaving the valley in burning and the unrest is still not over.

There is another Wani, Nabeel Ahmad Wani, 26, from Jwill join the largest border guarding force as an assistant commandant. While Nabeel, who was in Delhi on Sunday met Union home minister Rajnath Singh.

His mother, Hanifa Begum, in Udhampur over the phone. “I am very happy. My son’s dream has been fulfilled. I know he will work with honesty and dedication and will bring laurels to the country,”. “Every boy and girl (in the Valley) should follow their dreams and they will achieve them one day. They should work hard and make India proud,” Hanifa Begum said to journalists.

Rajnath Singh said he was immensely happy to meet Nabeel. “The success story of Nabeel shows that youth in Jammu and Kashmir have a lot of potential, his success will inspire many young boys and girls in the state,” he added.

He tweeted:

Government officials said Nabeel joining the force would send a message to the youth+ of the state misguided by anti-India forces: that they can get a good education and jobs, and work to build a stronger J&K and India.

Nabeel, a BTech from Pathankot, Punjab, told TV channels that unemployment was the biggest problem for J&K’s youth and only education could solve it. “The more educated we are, the better jobs we will get. We cannot get education by taking up stones but by holding a pen,” Nabeel, currently a contractual junior engineer in Udhampur, said.

“I had made it my aim to join the security forces. I appeared in various exams, including for the armed forces and BSF. I am happy I topped the BSF assistant commandant exam. I belong to a village. My mother and father supported me,” he said.

He completed his BTech in 2012 after a senior secondary education from NITL Higher Secondary School in Udhampur. While studying he would earn money teaching others and send funds to a sister studying engineering in Chandigarh. He won a government minority scholarship for higher education. Wani first sat for the exam for assistant commandant in 2013, but did not make it. This year he stood first.
Nabeel lost his father, Rafiq Ahmad, a schoolteacher, two years ago. His mother is a housewife and supported his dream.

In Delhi, Nabeel also met BSF chief K K Sharma, NSA Ajit Doval, home secretary Rajiv Mehrishi, the IB and RAW chiefs, and other senior officials.
