Greek communist MEPs call the EU to lift sanctions against earthquake-hit Syria

With a letter addressed to the President of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen, the MEPs of the Communist Party of Greece (KKE), Kostas Papadakis and Lefteris Nikolaou-Alavanos, demand the immediate lift of the embargo against Syria.

More specifically, as 902 portal reported, the two KKE eurodeputies write:

“After the unspeakable tragedy in Turkey and Syria with many thousands dead and missing people, the main task at this moment is to immediately express a multifaceted support and solidarity to those affected, both in Turkey and Syria.

The people of Syria in particular are in dire need of immediate Humanitarian Aid, basic materials  and medicines. However, the EU, US and NATO embargo, which accompanies their long-term intervention and which is experienced by the people of Syria, continues to exist despite the devastating earthquake and becomes an obstacle even for the expression of solidarity. Currently, a large effort to secure material aid for the earthquake-hit victims of Turkey and Syria by labor unions and other mass organizations is underway in our country, Greece, as well as in other countries.

We call the EU to undertake responsibility and lift immediately the unacceptable embargo and sanctions against Syria. So that the unhindered delivery of humanitarian aid to the people of Syria and Turkey will be ensured."
