In one of the firsts, founder and Chairperson of Reliance Foundation, Nita Ambani has been selected as an individual member of International Olympic Committee (IOC) on Thursday. This is for the first time that a woman has been selected to join the governing body of one of most prestigious sports events of the world.
A well known sports promoter and the wife of Anil Ambani, Nita was chosen as one of the administering board member of International Olympic Committee (IOC) at 129th session of the world body. Her election comes as the Rio Olympics is just one day away from its commencement. Nita was already elected as the board’s executive member from India in June and had been an active part of the board since then. Randhir Singh who is former Indian Olympic Association Secretary General and her predecessor is presently serving as an honorary member of IOC.
It is these members of the IOC administering body that will elect new IOC members following new recruiting procedure. The new members are to be elected keeping in mind the agendas and recommendations of the next, Olympics 2020. Even though the nominations are purely made on the basis of the merits, the new members are elected by the existing ones.
Prior to this, Mrs. Ambani is already well known for her innovative initiatives in the field of education, sports, health and art and culture. She has been endorsing an array of sports in India by developing the talents with a large number of grass roots initiatives. Her initiatives have so far covered more than 3 million children in the various fields of sports. She is also the inceptor of the Indian Super League which has helped a great deal in boosting Indian football and its popularity in India.
Speaking to media upon her news of selection Mrs Ambani said, I am truly humbled and overwhelmed to be elected by the IOC. This is recognition of the growing importance of India in the world stage and recognition for Indian women.” Adding further she said, “I have always believed in the power of sport to shape our youth. I believe that sports bring together communities, cultures, and generations has the power to unify and unite people. I look forward to spreading the spirit of Olympics and sports across our nation.”
