A Wall Street Banker living in New York has been arrested for torturing his roommate’s cat.

Ireland native Declan Garrity, 24, was arrested Wednesday morning for the abuse of his roommate’s cat over the span of three months. According to the New York Daily News, Lucy the cat suffered two right leg fractures, a fracture of the left pelvis, burns, broken claws, and muscle damage. She is now in an intensive care unit. Garrity was charged with “torturing and injuring animals,” two counts for aggravated cruelty to animals, and one for acting in a “depraved/sadistic manner.”

Garrity’s roommate claims that Lucy’s behavior changed after the banker moved into the Upper East Side New York apartment with her. Lucy began hiding in closets and refusing food; however, she never thought Garrity had anything to do with Lucy’s strange behavior; she thought her beloved cat simply had an undiagnosed medical condition.

In January, Garrity’s roommate found the cat feeling unwell when she returned home; Garrity claimed that an iron had fallen on the cat. She said, “I met him a couple of times, called his references and Googled him, but he had no record. He was a really great roommate and told me he had grown up with a cat and his parents had a dog.”

According to his LinkedIn profile, Garrity joined Barclays, a global financial service located in London, England, in 2014 as a financial analyst. He has been living and working in the U.S. on a work visa. On Thursday, prosecutors told the court that his employment with Barclays has been terminated; however, his defense attorney maintained that he is still employed. His leave of absence has not been discussed by Barclays.

A “Go Fund Me” page has been set up for Lucy to help pay her medical bills, which have reached $10,000. The family is hoping to raise $5,000. Lucy’s owner is just happy that she’s getting the care she needs. “She’s a great cat, I couldn’t love her any more,” the owner said. “She’s very attached to me.”
