SAN FRANCISCO, April 21, (THEWILL) – Barcelona star players inspired the Catalans to what will surely be the first part of a Domestic Double this season as they thrashed Sevilla 5-0 on Saturday to win the Copa del Rey.
Two goals from Luis Suarez and one each from Lionel Messi, Andres Iniesta and Philippe Coutinho saw barca lift the cup at the Wanda Metropolitano stadium in Madrid.
After being beaten 3-0 by Roma in their last big game, Barcelona’s stars returned to the starting line-up after being rested for the midweek league game at Celta Vigo.
The blaugrana were all over Sevilla from the start with Iniesta controlling the attack, and Messi’s free kick from 35 yards destined for the top corner was tipped over by David Soria less than ten minutes into the contest.
Sevilla couldn’t play at their usual high tempo game and should have been reduced to ten men when captain Escudero cynically stopped Messi from running free on goal.
Barca’s exhilarating display earns them their 30th triumph in this competition and fourth in a row, having reached the final in each of the last five years.
The Cup win also puts Barca on the verge of a third Domestic double in four years as Ernesto Valverde won his first trophy as a Barcelona coach.
However, a clean sweep of the domestic trophies, perhaps polished by La Liga’s first ever unbeaten season, will not eradicate the lingering disappointment from Barca’s Champions League exit to Roma.
