Rangers Crash Out Of CAF League

SAN FRANCISCO, April 15, (THEWILL) – Rangers International FC of Enugu have crashed out of 2016-2017 CAF competition after suffering a 3-0 defeat in Zambia against Zesco United in the play-off Round of the Caf Confederation Cup.

The Flying Antelope as Rangers are popularly called were officially bundled out after a 5-2 aggregate loss having played 2-2 in the first leg encounter in Enugu.

With the win Zesco have qualified for the group stage of the Caf Confederation Cup.

Rangers were relegated to the CAF Confederation Cup level having been kicked out of the CAF Champions League by Zamalek of Egypt.

The Nigeria Professional Football League champions threw away a 2-goal lead in Enugu in the first leg as the Zambia side levelled score.

Rangers who arrived Zambia late for the encounter following a protest for unpaid match allowance started the game on the back foot and were thoroughly punished by Ching’andu who scored two beautiful goals in the first half in the 25 and 38th minutes.

Jesse Were scored a beautiful bender in the 74th minute to put the game beyond Rangers.

Zesco United were previous Champions of the Zambia Premier League in 2015, finishing second in 2016 just below Champions, Zanaco.

Zesco United FC progressed to the playoff phase of the CAF Confederation Cup after a 5-3 aggregate win over Burundian side Le Messager.

Elsewhere, Mbabane Swallows (Swaziland) defeated AC Leopards (Congo) 4-2 and 4-3 aggregate win, while Mouloudia Alger (Algeria) recorded a 4-1 aggregate win over Young Africans (Tanzania).
