US Ambassador to the UN, Nikki Haley, announced a $285 million cut to the UN’s budget for 2018-2019. This was already on top of a $200 million cut in the UN’s budget announced by UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres two weeks ago. The UN’s budget covers two years and begins in the January of every even-numbered year.
President Trump threatened to cut financial aid to countries that voted for a UN resolution condemning the US’ decision to declare Jerusalem the capital of Israel. The US pays 22% of the UN’s budget (roughly $1.2 billion) and 28% of its peacekeeping effort.
