A growing number of international voices are warning that failure to temper tensions between the United States and Russia could bring the world to the brink of a devastating conflict.
One of those voices, former Russian general Evgeny Buzhinskiy says that current efforts to destabilize relations between the two countries are reaching a point far more dangerous than anything during the Cold War.
“It’s worse than the Cold War,” he said, adding. “It’s a real war.
“It’ll be the last war in the history of mankind.”
Buzhinskiy said the heightened tensions following Russia’s being blamed for poisoning Sergei Skripal and his daughter Yulia in the UK and subsequent expelling of its diplomats from the West are only making matters worse.
“The United States is saying the pressure will continue. What is that going to achieve? You are going to achieve regime change? It is useless.
“You don’t know Russians. There more pressure there is, the more the society is concentrated around the president.”
As pressure increases, he said, so will Russian animosity toward the West.
“Actually you are cornering Russia, and to corner Russia is a very dangerous thing.”
Buzhinskiy isn’t the only one currently expressing concern over deteriorating relations between Russia and the West.
John Pilger, a documentary film maker and journalist who frequently speaks out against western policy, told Russian state media that current economic pressure on both Russia and China could be moving the nations closer to war footing.
“Forget about the whole idea of trade war, we’ve got the prospect of a real war unless this propaganda war is seen through,” he said.
