Six people have been Arrested on suspicion of being members of the proscribed far right group National Action.

Those arrested include a 37-year-old woman from Banbury and five men between the ages of 21 and 37 from Cambridge, Banbury, Wolverhampton, Leicester and Stockport.

All six defendants were detained under Section 41 of the Terrorism Act and are being held at a West Midlands police station.

The intelligence-led operation was carried out by the West Midlands Counter Terrorism Unit in conjunction with North West CTU, South East CTU, Eastern CTIU and East Midlands Special Operations Unit (Special Branch).

A police spokesperson said a number of properties are being searched as part of the investigation and “there was no threat to public safety”.

National Action is an extreme neo-Nazi group that was added to the list of proscribed organisations by the Home Office in December 2016 for promoting acts of violence and terrorism. It specifically targets young people on social media by pushing a simplified white nationalist us-vs-them narrative.

The group has a small but committed base of supporters, who found infamy for cheering the death of MP Jo Cox in the days prior to the Brexit vote and carrying out small-scale demonstrations where their young supporters congregate in town centres and pose making Hitler salutes.
