“Multiple Minority-ness”: ECMI Invites You for Its Second Public Lecture

ECMI Invites for the second Public Lecture of this semester. The lecture delivered by Dr. Reetta Toivanen will take place at Kompagnietor on 30 October 2017 at 17:00.

In addition to its annual semester course on European Minority Rights and Minority Protection Regime, the ECMI organizes Public Lectures at the Kompagnietor.

The second lecture of this semester will take place on 30 October 2017 at 17:00 . Dr. Reetta Toivanen (University of Helsinki) will speak about the intersectionality and minority rights and will deliver a lecture with a title “Multiple Minority-ness: on the Legal Protection of Being the Several ‘Others'”. After the lecture, the visitors will have a chance to ask questions and discuss the topic together with the guest speaker and the ECMI team. The event is open to the public.

The categories emanating from international human rights law defining the belonging of people to different types of minorities invites for a re-assessment. These varying minority categories including indigenous peoples, national (historical) minorities and migrants, tend to assign people to different types or levels of specific protection. When analysing minority issues from a viewpoint that takes intersectionality seriously, the focus shifts towards understanding populations which have been historically oppressed in multiple dimensions. The justifications for different treatment are not value-free. Thus, the question of this presentation discusses the legitimacy and consequences of accepting the current typology when highlighting the issues pertaining to multiple discrimination.
