The ECMI held meeting at the University of Georgia in Tbilisi and donated books to the newly established CSEM Library.

We are pleased to share that the Ecmi donated the complete series of the European Yearbook on Minority Issues to the newly established Library of the Centre for the Studies of Ethnicity and Multiculturalism in Tbilisi. The library is initiated by Prof. Giorgi Sordia (Director of CSEM). The Library of the Centre for the Studies of Ethnicity and Multiculturalism (CSEM) was opened on 12th of June 2017 in cooperation of the University of Georgia (UG).

Dr. Zora Popova (ECMI Senior Research Associate) and Ms. Tamari Bulia (ECMI Communications and Outreach Coordinator) visited the library and the University of Georgia and held a cooperation meeting with Mr. Konstantin Topuria (Rector of the University of Georgia). The ECMI and the UG count over 7 years of established cooperation. During the meeting both sides expressed a wish to strengthen the collaboration and work together on a number of research and teaching initiatives. “ECMI has already established a good name in Georgia when it comes to minority rights and ethnic issues. We are happy to support them in upcoming initiatives,” said Mr. Topuria.

About the ECMI work in Georgia

ECMI has been operating a representation in the Caucasus, based in Tbilisi, since 2003. The office was actively involved in building stable and inclusive democracies throughout the region, particularly in Georgia. ECMI Caucasus has worked to improve the competencies of minority organizations and assist governments in building institutional capacities to develop and implement policies on national minority issues.

ECMI Caucasus has supported the establishment of the Council of National Minorities (CNM), functioning under the aegis of the Public Defender, as well as the Javakheti Citizens’ Forum (JCF) and the Tsalka Citizens’ Forum (TCF) to encourage dialogue and permanent, institutionalized structures for minority-state consultation.  In addition to the establishment of consultative bodies, the ECMI representation in Georgia has undertaken a range of efforts with regard to minority issues, such as assisting in the process of repatriation, conducting research on a number of issues relating to national minorities throughout the region while publishing books and working papers, both in hardcover and online.
