(Caveat: I’m not an expert, and I didn’t follow any of this stuff at all when it originally went down, but these are the most salient details as best I could make them out after thorough and exhaustive research on Google for at least several minutes…)
Back in 2002, the Lovecraft-inspired and award-winning Eternal Darkness: Sanity’s Requiem psychological horror game was released for the GameCube (I’ve never played it, I was strictly a PC guy back in those days). The game was developed by Silicon Knights, headed by the now notorious and “controversial” game designer Denis Dyack. Silicon Knights declared bankruptcy in 2014, after a bunch of lawsuits and court cases and all sorts of legal trouble, at which point Dyack had already left to co-found Precursor Games with some other guys from Silicon Knights (among them Kenneth McCulloch, who was sentenced in a child pornography case two years ago). Precursor Games also bit the dust, after two failed Kickstarters in 2013 to raise funding for Shadow of the Eternals, which was to have been a “spiritual successor” to Eternal Darkness. The reason for the failure, as far as I understand it, was that people simply didn’t trust Dyack after everything that had happened (and was happening at the time) with Silicon Knights, even though there was a huge interest in a sequel to Eternal Darkness. Dyack was understandably unhappy about this state of affairs, and accused “unethical” game journalists – he has singled out Kotaku and Jim Sterling – for ruining the project.
But Dyack hasn’t given up, by the looks of it, and last week he released a podcast in which he talked about the future prospects for Shadow of the Eternals (starting at around the 08:30 mark). The game is still being developed, according to Dyack, by Quantum Entanglement Entertainment (this is Dyack’s latest company, since 2014). A trailer and some game footage (recycled from the Kickstarters) has also been uploaded to Dyack’s YouTube channel, called The Quantum Channel.
This is from the company game page:
Shadow of the Eternals is a horror from the creators of Eternal Darkness:Sanity’s Requiem, featuring an eclectic cast of heroes and villains that spans thousands of years of history with an H.P. Lovecraft flare!
I guess we’ll have to wait and see whether Shadow of the Eternals will indeed be “a horror,” yet again, or whether it will finally be a horror game…
