Let's keep them from Zika spraying Coconut Grove

I saw a Miami-Dade County mosquito Spraying truck early Sunday morning. It parked on Grand Avenue about 8:30 am, near the Mayfair, and four guys got out. Uh oh, I thought. We were told they were not spraying in Coconut Grove, what's this all about.

I went over and spoke with the guys. They told me that they are not spraying, they were just canvasing the area. Which is good for two reasons; one, they are actually investigating for the virus and standing water and such, and two: they have not sprayed. Yet.

But I good idea to prevent them from spraying would be to get rid of standing water at your house, turn over water filled flower pots, buckets or even old tires. I know many of you have bird feeders and birdbaths and all sort of art hanging from your trees. This collects standing water.

Neighbors have contacted me to tell me that the trucks are spraying, but I've been told multiple times by multiple people that they are not. So I'm not sure what the story is as I'm hearing conflicting stories.

Commissioner Ken Russell said, "My understanding is that there is one trap that is being checked on a Weekly Basis in front of the Barnacle. If warranted, that triggers the truck spraying which would happen at the most on that weekly basis. It is not the same chemical that is being used from the airplanes."

Here's a list of how to control mosquitoes at your home from the Centers for Disease Control.
