Reality Show or Moral Decay? National Commission on Culture slams ‘Perfect Match Xtra’ reality show as immoral insult to Ghanaian values”

Accra, Ghana – The Director for Policy Planning, Research, Monitoring and Evaluation at the National Commission on Culture (NCC), Dr. Richardson Commey Fio, has expressed deep concern over the recently launched reality show, “Perfect Match Xtra.”

Dr. Fio asserts that the nature of the show's content is an insult to the moral principles of the country and raises questions about the type of entertainment being prioritized.

“Perfect Match Xtra,” an initiative of Media General, debuted on television screens in May 2023. The show revolves around the quest for finding a perfect partner, with contestants being housed together in a single structure. Their interactions and attempts to woo their ideal match are broadcasted live to the audience.

Dr. Fio, a prominent cultural figure, believes that the show's content perpetuates a culture that prioritizes immoral entertainment and undermines the efforts to raise a generation of disciplined and morally upright leaders.

“The authorities cannot disregard the nature of this programme and expect to produce a generation of leaders with strong moral values,” Dr. Fio emphasized. “This ‘Perfect Match Xtra' show by TV3 is a time bomb waiting to explode. You can choose to disagree with me, but I can assure you that the realities of the ripple effects will soon blast on our faces… and sadly, it won't be a pleasant one.”

According to Dr. Fio, the show exhibits various elements of immorality that are seen as an insult to the fundamental principles of Ghanaian culture. He expressed his disappointment at the perceived disregard for the decency and dignity of Ghanaian men and women. He questioned the motive behind blindly adopting anything in the name of modernity and trends, highlighting the potential consequences for the nation's cultural values.

“Must we just copy anything in the name of modernity and trends? Is this the kind of result we envisaged in the name of media freedom and human rights? I weep for our dear nation,” Dr. Fio stressed.

The concerns raised by the NCC's Director for Policy Planning, Research, Monitoring and Evaluation have sparked a national debate about the impact of reality shows on Ghanaian culture. While some argue that such programs reflect changing societal norms and freedom of expression, others worry about the erosion of traditional values and the potential harm to the moral fabric of the country.

As the discussion continues, it remains to be seen how the creators and broadcasters of “Perfect Match Xtra” will respond to the criticisms raised by Dr. Fio and the National Commission on Culture.
