Electoral Commission deny allegations of illegally inserting unqualified candidate into Assin North voters’ register

The Electoral Commission (EC) has responded to a press statement by the National Communications Officer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) which alleged collaboration between the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and the EC to transfer the vote of one Charles Opoku to the Assin North Constituency for the upcoming by-election.

The EC categorically denies these claims, stating that they have not received any request from the NPP to transfer the votes of any individual. The EC dismisses the allegation as false and an invention aimed at tarnishing the integrity of the Electoral Commission.

According to Article 94 of the 1992 Constitution, a person does not need to be a Registered Voter in a specific constituency to contest elections there. As long as the individual is a Ghanaian citizen, at least 21 years old, of sound mind, and a registered voter, they are eligible to contest elections.

Furthermore, if a person wishes to contest in a constituency where they are not originally from, they can still be eligible if they are ordinarily resident in that constituency or have been a resident there for at least five years out of the previous ten years preceding the election.

The EC emphasizes that being a registered voter in a particular constituency is not a requirement for contesting elections, as stated in the Constitution. Therefore, there is no need for the alleged transfers mentioned by the NDC's Communications Officer.

The EC asserts that it has been transparent, accountable, and diligent in carrying out its mandate by the Constitution. The NDC has yet to provide evidence to support any of its allegations against the EC.

The statement added that “The continuous vilification of state institutions, such as the EC, by the NDC undermines our democracy and weakens the system. The EC remains committed to transparency, fairness, and integrity in all its operations and urges the people of Ghana to trust in its ability to deliver credible elections”.
