The Ghana Education Service (GES) has refuted claims circulating that it intends to cancel the Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) for junior high school students.

In response to these claims, the GES clarified that it is in the process of transitioning from the old objectives-based Curriculum to the standards-based curriculum, which may lead to changes in the nature and format of the BECE.

During a stakeholder engagement on the grading system organized by the West African Examinations Council (WAEC), Dr Eric Nkansah, the Director General of GES, categorically stated that reports of the alleged cancellation of the BECE are false.

He affirmed, “We are not cancelling the BECE. What is confusing people or some of our people is that we are now moving away from the old objectives-based curriculum to the standards-based curriculum, and it does not mean that those on the standards-based curriculum will not write BECE. They will also write but perhaps the nature and form may change. So please don't communicate that we are not writing BECE.”

The BECE, which is conducted by WAEC, serves as a standardized examination for junior high school graduates who are preparing to enter senior high school.
