According to the Indian Heart Association, heart disease is the leading cause of death and a silent epidemic among Indians. Despite having less than 20% of the world’s population, India is estimated to bear approximately 60% of the world’s heart disease burden.
So, as the world marks ‘World Heart Day’ on September 29, Practo, India’s leading integrated healthcare company, carried out a deep dive into India’s heart health trends and discovered a 200% increase in queries related to heart attacks in the last three months.
Reports of the deaths of many well-known celebrities in the last two years due to Heart-related issues have raised public awareness about heart health. It has increased caution, particularly among urban populations living in metropolitan areas.

This is displayed in Practo’s Insights, where Tier 1 cities such as Bangalore, Delhi, Mumbai, Hyderabad, and Pune received 75% of heart attack queries, while Tier 2 cities received 25%.
In addition to queries about heart attacks, queries about hypertension have increased by 60% in the last three months. While 92% of these queries originated in tier 1 cities, only 7% originated in tier 2 cities. This could be due to a lack of understanding about heart health in smaller towns and villages. In addition, there was a 36% increase in queries about the peripheral arterial disease.
As more people seek medical intervention for heart disease, here are some other findings from the study (YoY comparison of the last three months):
56% of the consultations were from people aged 30-39.
75% of these came from men, while 25% came from women.
Furthermore, 8% of Practo patients who consulted with cardiologists were likely infected with Covid-19 in the past.
This demonstrates how heart health is not always related to age and has evolved into a lifestyle issue, with Covid-19 being one of its trigger points.
