Hyderabad: State Govt finalizes executing departments for 15 new bridges

In order to build 15 new bridges across the Musi and Esa rivers, the Telangana government has now decided on the executing departments.

Seven of these bridges will be built by the Hyderabad Metropolitan Development Authority (HMDA), four by the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC), three by the Hyderbad Road Development Corporation Limited (HRDCL), and the final one by the Quli Qutub Shah Urban Development Authority (QQSUDA).

For the construction of bridges, Rs 545 crore has already been approved by the state government. Due to the lack of assignment to any department, the work was delayed. The government issued an order a few days back to finalize the departments responsible for executing the project.

For the Development of surrounding areas along the Musi and Esa rivers, the government agreed to build bridges independently across the rivers.

There is a great need for new bridges since the existing ones can no longer handle the increase in traffic loads. The QQSUDA will take up the iconic pedestrian bridge at Afzalgunj (Rs 40 crore). GHMC, HMDA, and HRDCL have been instructed to take appropriate action in order to take up construction, duly arranging funds with their own resources.

With the growing population and the need for a better road network and traffic density in mind, a detailed traffic study was conducted to determine where additional bridges should be built across Musi.

River Musi is also said to become a major tourist attraction in the coming years, with the State government undertaking beautification and development projects along the river that runs through the city.

To carry out the task, a comprehensive master plan must be created with the help of a consultant. According to Municipal Administration & Urban Development officials, the plan will include road development on both sides as well as riverfront development.
