More than 5000 undertrials remain in prisons throughout Telangana

Across Telangana, more than 5,000 people are detained in prisons. A total of 1,300 prisoners are lodged in Cherlapally jail, which is the second largest jail in the state.

The National Crime Record Bureau (NCRB) released prison statistics – India 2020 in December 2021 that showed 2,327 inmates had been locked up for less than three months. Five of the undertrials were sentenced to five years in prison. Currently, Telangana has 7,000 prisoners, including both undertrials and convicts.

More than three years have passed since accused of the Communist Party of India (Maoist) and those associated with the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act were jailed by the National Investigation Agency (NIA), the Telangana Police, and those charged under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act (NDPS).

Former Telangana director general of prisons VK Singh was quoted by the Times of India as saying, “The judiciary alone cannot reduce the number of cases against undertrials.”. According to Singh, the government must ensure that judges are appointed to courts promptly.

Rowdy Sheeter shot dead in Hyderabad

It has been reported that another alleged criminal shot dead a history-sheeter in the Madhapur area, which is under extreme surveillance. In this case, Mohd Ismail, a history-sheeter at Kalapather police station, was shot at point-blank range by a man named Mujahid alias Mujju from Dundigal.

A fight broke out between Ismail and Mujju while Ismail was traveling in a car with three other people from Jubilee Hills to Madhapur.

When Mujju shot Ismail with a weapon, Ismail fell and tried to run away. Mujju was able to kill him on the spot as a result of mujju’s gunshot. In the early hours of the morning, the incident took place near Kavuri Hills. There was an immediate response from Cyberabad police.

The killing could have been the result of some issues relating to Ismail and Mujju’s property dealings. Recently, Ismail was released from jail. During their stay in prison, Ismail and Mujju came into contact, police sources reported.

Cyberabad police requested more information about Ismail from their counterparts in Hyderabad.
