“Global cases cross 10 mn, living with the virus is the new normal”- WHO

Geneva: With the cases of coronavirus not seeming in the mood to take a downward trend, the global Health Body has said that we will now have to learn to live with the disease amidst us. World Health Organization’s (WHO) Chief on a statement, said that all countries who are currently or have been infected with the Virus have to normalise living with it atleast for the coming months if not forever.

This statement comes after the disease has terrorized the entire world, infecting over 10 million people with more than 500,000 fatalies.

Xinhua news agency reported WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus saying at a daily press briefing on Monday,”The critical question that all countries will face in the coming months is how to live with this virus. That is the new normal.”

Though several countries are succeeding in flattening COVID-19’s curve to an extent, the virus isn’t ceasing to spread rapidly in other places.

According to the latest WHO numbers, as of 5.30pm IST on Tuesday, the total number of infected cases worldwide had reached10,435,421, including 508, 847 deaths.

Mr. Tedros spoke about the changes brought in the world after it was hit with the pandemic, pointing out the positive aspects as well.

“Six months ago, none of us could have imagined how our world — and our lives — would be thrown into turmoil by this new virus,” the WHO chief said.

“The pandemic has brought out the best and the worst of humanity,” he continued. “All over the world, we have seen heartwarming acts of resilience, inventiveness, solidarity, and kindness. But we have also seen concerning signs of stigma, misinformation and the politicization of the pandemic.”

The WHO chief ruled out five key guidelines to be followed by all countries to prioritise the health and well-being of its respective citizens. He mentioned empowerment of communities and individuals to be able to safeguard themselves as well as others, reducing the virus transmission, protecting lives with various medical treatments like oxygen and dexamethasone, rapidly boosting the research on covid-19 and develop of its vaccine, and lastly, staying apolitical by rather strengthening political ties.

Mr. Tedros also announced an updated and detailed timeline of the WHO’s response to the pandemic for the public to understand how the UN health body has been responding to the outbreak.

In this document, WHO will be mentioning the intricate details of the role it played and the methods it employed in the fight to defeat the virus to common people.
