Lynch has become a social media sensation in his capacity as the General Secretary of the Rail, Maritime, and Transport (RMT) Union.

He has been doing the rounds in the media to explain and defend the ongoing rail worker strike in the United Kingdom.

On Saturday morning, he was on RTE Radio 1 to do just that, while also opening up on his roots.

At the end of the interview, he revealed that he was planning on visiting Ireland later this year, before aiming a stunning dig at Treaty Utd.

Lynch said: “I’ll be there in August.

“I’ll be at Turner’s Cross watching Cork City against whatever Limerick are called these days. What is it? Treaty United or something?”

Treaty Utd were, of course, entered into the First Division in 2021, bringing League of Ireland football back to Limerick after a 12-month absence.

Social media was abuzz with reaction to the interview, specifically the brief League of Ireland chat.

One user said: “Mick Lynch doing more to promote the LOI in one morning than RTÉ have done in years.”

Another joked: “Mick Lynch is a league of Ireland fan, unfortunately its Cork City.”

Another said: “Mick Lynch going to watch Cork City and Treaty United should add a few to the gate!”

IRISH ROOTS

Lynch – who admitted to supporting Brexit – also revealed the extent of his Irish roots.

His mother, he confided, is from Crossmaglen in Co. Armagh while his dad hails from Cork, hence his support for the Leesiders.

While he grew up near Paddington, in London, Lynch infamously cited James Connolly – an Irish republican and trade union leader.

During his interview on RTE Radio, Lynch delved deeper into his admiration for Connolly, who was executed following the Easter Rising in 1916.

He said: “One of the things I like about him is he wasn’t born in Ireland.

“He was born in Scotland and he carried a Scottish accent his entire life but that didn’t stop him serving his community and serving people.

“He had a fantastic life, that’s what I like about him.”
