Cyclone Biporjoy Intensifies into Severe Storm, Monsoon likely to slow

Biporjoy, the first Cyclonic Storm in the Arabian Sea this year, has transformed into a very Severe Cyclonic Storm. Meteorologists have predicted a "slow" onset of the monsoon in Kerala and "weak" progress ahead of its southern peninsula. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) said that conditions are favorable for the onset of monsoon in Kerala today or tomorrow. However, the cyclonic storm is affecting the intensity of monsoon and will have a 'slow' start over Kerala.

No major impact is predicted on surrounding countries including India

According to the Meteorological Department, it is likely to move northwards and turn into a very severe cyclonic storm. After this, it will move north-northwestward over the next three days. However, the IMD has not yet predicted any major impact on countries bordering the Arabian Sea, including India, Oman, Iran and Pakistan.

Know the direction of the storm's track?

Meteorologists say the tentative track of the cyclone will be in a northerly direction, but storms often prove the predicted track and intensity wrong. Weather forecasting agencies said that the storm was changing from a cyclone to a severe cyclonic storm in just 48 hours, which could prove the previous assessment wrong. Atmospheric conditions indicate that a very severe cyclonic storm is likely to continue till June 12.
