There was a low turnout in Sokoto state on Wednesday, May 1, at the workers’ day celebration.
A cross section of workers interviewed at the annual event held at Giginya Memorial Stadium attributed the development to non-payment of April salary, Daily Trust reports.

“Some of us cannot afford transportation to this place,” one of the workers said.
During his address, the state chairman of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Comrade Aminu Umar, urged the state Government to pay the newly approved of N30,000 minimum wage.
The chairman begged the state government to look into the plight of retired teachers and local government staffers who have waited so long for their benefits.
Comrade Umar also asked the government to address salary difference between primary and secondary schools teachers in the state and to pay 2018 leave grant of tertiary institutions.
Governor Aminu Waziri Tambuwal, who was represented by the head of service, Dr Buhari Bello Kwar, said the state government has done many things to improve the welfare of its workers.
He said the timely payment of salary, training and retraining of staff and the recent sale of government quarters to workers among others were some of the move the government has made.
He also assured the workers that their welfare and training would remain very important to the state government.

Meanwhile, Legit.ng earlier reported that the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Ondo state tasked Nigerian workers on sincerity in their service to the nation as they celebrated the 2019 workers’ day.
This admonition is contained in a statement issued on Wednesday in Akure by Alex Kalejaiye, the state publicity secretary of the party.
