The urban local Bodies in the state should become financially self reliant and focus on increasing their financial resources along with maintaining sanitation which should be among the top priorities. For long term development, it is essential for the urban local bodies to be self reliant, said chief minister Trivendra Singh Rawat while speaking at an orientation workshop for elected representatives in local bodies held here on Wednesday.
He said that the State Government has recently extended the financial powers of mayors, chairpersons and the boards of urban local bodies.
This enhancement of financial and discriminatory powers will help them discharge their responsibilities in a better manner towards facilitating public welfare and developmental works. Speaking of the need for local bodies becoming self reliant, he cited the example of Nagpur city where Rs 85 crore is being earned in a year from urine.
Exhorting the elected public representatives in local bodies to appreciate the opportunity given to them by the public, Rawat exhorted them to work seriously for development and set an ideal example. The public representatives in local bodies need to work on innovative ideas for development.
Efforts should be made to enhance source of income through sensible use of naturally available resources.
The public representatives should interact with all groups including experts and intellectuals for working on new alternatives, said Rawat.
Stating that majority of ULBs are located along the banks of rivers, he said that this increases the responsibility of the local bodies towards ensuring the cleanliness and conservation of the rivers.
Also, as the importance of the environment is greater in a Himalayan state, cleanliness should be accorded top priority.
The ULBs can also make important contributions towards doubling the income of farmers by 2022, facilitating housing for all, development of growth centres and encouraging self employment.
The State’s Urban Development and Housing minister Madan Kaushik, Dehradun mayor Sunil Uniyal ‘Gama’, Rishikesh mayor Anita Mamgai, Urban Development secretary Shailesh Bagauli and chairpersons of local bodies in the Garhwal region were also present on the occasion.
