Among the presidential candidates in Latvia, the existing President Raimonds Vējonis is more well-known than Egils Levits among residents. However, Vējonis’ chances of becoming president again are considered low by residents, says representative of Egils Levits’ supporting initiative For an Excellent Latvia’s President Kristīne Tjarve, commenting on results of a survey performed by SKDS.
According to survey data, 44% of interviewed Latvian citizens consider Levits an appropriate presidential candidate, 22% do not consider him appropriate, whereas 34% of interviewed residents had no opinion as they had not even heard of Levits prior to the survey. As for Vējonis, 26% of interviewed Latvian citizens consider him an appropriate presidential candidate, 59% do not consider him appropriate, whereas 16% had no opinion.
The survey reveals that far more Latvian-speaking Respondents want to see Levits as Latvia’s next president, whereas Russian-speaking residents are more negative about him. On top of that, most Russian-speaking respondents have said that they’ve never even heard of Levits. Among Latvian-speaking respondents, 58% consider Levits an appropriate presidential candidate, whereas 15% consider him inappropriate and 27% say they know nothing about him. As for Russian-speaking respondents – 52% of them said they have never heard of him, 36% consider him inappropriate for the post and only 12% want to see him as Latvia’s next president.
Only 9% of Latvian-speaking respondents and 30% of Russian-speaking respondents said they’ve either never heard of Vējonis or have no opinion about him. Among Latvian-speaking respondents Vējonis was named as appropriate presidential candidate by 63% of respondents, whereas among Russian-speaking respondents he was named inappropriate by 50%.
Of the respondents that had no opinion about one candidate or another, Levits was named appropriate to become Latvia’s next president by 67% of respondents, whereas 33% said they consider him inappropriate. 80% of Latvian-speaking respondents consider Levits an appropriate presidential candidate, whereas among Russian-speaking respondents support for Levits is voiced by 26%.
Vējonis is considered an appropriate presidential candidate by 30% of respondents with an opinion on this matter, whereas 70% of respondents consider him inappropriate.
The public opinion survey was organized by SKDS following a request from For an Excellent Latvia’s President association. The internet survey spanned 23rd to 27th March. Over the course of this period of time, 1,005 Latvian residents had participated in it.
