ActionAid and UDS sign MoU to advance research

The University for Development Studies (UDS) has signed a five-year memorandum of understanding (MoU) with ActionAid Ghana to undertake research to provide credible data for public policy advocacy and development in northern Ghana.

The MoU will enable the two institutions to conduct compelling research into areas such as Climate Change, Poverty, Gender, Women Empowerment and Livelihoods.

Addressing the media after the short signing ceremony, Country Director of ActioAid Ghana John Nkaw described UDS as a credible research-based institution which has distinguished itself in research over the years.

He believes the human resource expertise of the University will help in advancing evidence around the research areas and better inform government policies and programmes.

“ActionAid has been engaging in public policy advocacy in the country which has made a lot of gains and public sector reforms.

“We are currently implementing our country strategy Paper 7 which is dubbed ‘Active Citizens for Social Justice’ which seems to improve the livelihoods of women and their rights.”

He is optimistic the research collaboration will draw government’s attention to the need for increased investment in renewable energy and other critical areas in the northern parts of the country.

For his part, Vice Chancellor of the University for Development Studies (UDS) Prof. Seidu Al-hassan said the MoU will promote collaborative research between the University and ActionAid Ghana.

He said as a research-based university, the MoU would help the two institutions to undertake compelling research that would help build credible data for policy makers and development partners.

“The UDS has been looking forward to have such industry relationship whereby we can have industries asking to collaborate with us to do something together, and I am sure this is just the beginning.

“We have been thinking about how we can translate all the theories into improving on the lives of the people,” he said.
