In a statement released today, President Joe Biden hailed the announcement between the United Kingdom and the European Union on the Windsor Framework as an “essential step” in preserving and strengthening peace and progress of the Good Friday Agreement.

“Northern Ireland can accomplish the extraordinary when its leaders work together in common cause. And I hope – as we all do – that Northern Ireland’s political institutions are soon back up and running,” said Biden.

As Northern Ireland prepares to celebrate the 25th anniversary of the Agreement in April, Biden urged everyone to remember that ending decades of conflict was not easy or inevitable.

A deal was agreed today between PM Sunak and Ursula von der Leyen on post-Brexit trading arrangements for Northern Ireland, after more than a year of negotiations between the UK and European Union.

The Northern Ireland Protocol was the name given to the special arrangements agreed at the time so that goods could continue to flow into Northern Ireland and onwards without new controls. Inspections have had to occur at the dotted line in the Irish Sea. The new plan, the Windsor Framework, is to lift the checks on items that stay in Northern Ireland, while controls remain for items due to head south.
