Boko Haram: UNDP to help the state recover

The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) has expressed commitment to carry Adamawa State along in its Recovery, Development and Peace Building Initiative in the North-East.

The head UNDP sub office North-east in Maiduguri Ms Mizuho Yokoi who led the UNDP team on a courtesy visit to the State Governor Mohammad Umar Jibrilla at government house revealed that UNDP in the past few years has impacted the lives of Communities affected by Boko Haram insurgency in the North-East.

UNDP having observed  the condition of the affected communities after military take over wished to launch its Recovery, Development and Peace Building Initiative to get the affected communities back on track to continue their normal life.

As part of its programme in the North-east UNDP according to Yokoi has rehabilitated schools in Hong, Mubi, Uba among other interventions noting that this time around they will shift attention in the area of Agro inputs and intends to focus attention to Maiha LGA to boost food production in the affected communities in the LG and hopefully extend such services to other LGAs.

UNDP she added is also looking forward to introduce vocational training to the affected communities and noted the state skills acquisition centres  by the UNDP team will be carried out to decide the kind of support they will provide.

She equally appealed to the State Government to assist them in identifying beneficiaries to ensure only targeted persons benefitted from the gesture.

In his response, Deputy Governor Engr. Martins Babale who received the UNDP delegation observed that apart from the 7 LGAs affected by the Boko Haram sect in the northern part of the State, the southern zone around Mayo Belwa, Jada and Ganye he lamented has also fallen victim of the insurgent group where both private and government properties were destroyed.

This was in addition to the farmers/herders clash in Numan, Demsa, Lamurde and some parts of Shelleng LGAs were also human lives and properties worth millions of Naira were destroyed leaving the people in shattered condition and appealed to the UNDP team to as well extend their humanitarian service to the affected communities to ease their hardship.
