PHCN: Lawmaker Advocate For Adequate Billing System

The Member of the Federal House of  Representative Rep. Gbenga Ojoawo (APC, Oyo) , has called for a payment template that reflects the actual volume of consumption by the Electricity consumers in Nigeria.

The lawmaker who made the call on Wednesday, also urged  the stakeholders’ conference in the power sector to establishing an acceptable electricity billing system in the country.

While speaking with journalists in Abuja Rep. Ojoawo faulted the current electricity billing system approved by the National Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC).

He also described the estimated billing system as irrational, adding that consumers were pained and they were made to pay for services they do not enjoy.

According to him, the estimated billing system is unjustifiably fraudulent as it is usually out of sync with reality; adding that “it neither reflects the services rendered nor corroborate the actual meter reading”.
Instead of  depend on meter readings to determine consumers, monthly bill, PHCN has apparently devised an estimated billing where officials sit in the comfort of their offices and determine bills for consumers.
This is a very great challenge because one may not be able to believe in them or feel happy about the estimated bill the electricity workers could give.
One will be worried that he has not consumed that kind of price that may be tagged to him It is so complex and worrying that one has to contend with this kind of development, but one will be very much assured either the old meters are placed there for evaluation or the pre-paid.
Like the phone we use, we buy the card and as you use, you are convinced that you have used up to that kind of price that will be tagged to you”, Ojoawo said.
Consequently, Ajoawo called on operators in the electricity sector to design the pricing system in such a way that individuals will be happy to pay for the service.
