Officer shot while transporting burglary suspect in Arnold

JEFFERSON CO., Mo. – Emergency crews are on scene in Arnold after an officer was shot. According to the Arnold Police Department, an officer was shot Tuesday afternoon and transported to a hospital with life-threatening injuries.

The officer has been identified as 44-year-old Ryan O'Conner, he's been with the Arnold Police Department for at least two years, and has been an officer for 20 years. He was with the St. Louis County Police Department for 12 years.

In a 4:30 p.m. press conference, a Jefferson County Sheriff's Office spokesperson said O'Conner was in surgery.

Images from 5 On Your Side’s chopper show an Arnold police vehicle crashed into a propane tank outside the police department. Police were called to the 1800 block of Fox Point around 12:45 p.m. on a burglary call.

According to the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office, the officer was transporting the suspect to the Arnold Police Department when he was shot near the back of the head. It’s unclear if the suspect had a gun on him or if he had the officer’s weapon. The suspect was also transported to a hospital and is in serious condition.
