Constitution Day: Former CJIs on the importance of the Day

Constitution Day is celebrated every year on November 26 to commemorate the day when the draft of the Constitution was first introduced in the Constituent assembly. The Union Cabinet, in 2015, decided to declare November 26 as Constitution Day to promote Constitutional Values among the citizens.

The day, prior to being known as Constitution Day, was also known as National Law Day.

The Constituent Assembly had appointed the Dr B.R. Ambedkar-led committee to draft the bill which was dully adopted on November 26, 1949, however, it took the constituent assembly till January 26, 1950, to implement the constitution across the nation.

The Constitution not only empowers the citizens but also gives the state a framework to carry out smooth governance for the betterment of India and the citizens. Former Chief Justice and prominent leaders have time and again come out to highlight the importance of the Constitution and also imparted remarks on the duties and responsibilities, the citizen owes to the constitution.
