A principal of a government School in Uttar Pradesh’s Ayodhya district has been suspended after a viral video showed just boiled rice mixed with salt being served to the school children in a mid-day meal.

A video of school children eating rice-salt in mid-day meals inside the school in Ayodhya is doing rounds on social media.

The 2-minute video, shot by the student’s parents, shows children seated on the floor and eating the rice-and-salt served under the Centre’s Mid-Day Meal Scheme.

The cameraperson also shows a wall painted with the Mid-Day Meal menu which mentioned milk, roti, dal, vegetable and rice in lunch.

Where does this menu say rice-salt ? the man asked in the video.

Taking cognizance of the matter, District Magistrate Nitish Kumar said he has suspended the school principal on the basis of the video, which is doing rounds on social media. The DM has also ordered an inquiry into the case.

The food has to be served as per the scheme menu. No laxity will be tolerated, Kumar said.

In 2019, Pawan Jaiswal, a journalist with a Hindi newspaper in Mirzapur district, had been suspended days after he filmed children eating roti and salt in the mid-day meals served in a primary school in Mirzapur district of Uttar Pradesh.

The Uttar Pradesh police had booked him for hatching a conspiracy to defame the government. Later, he was cleared by the UP police.

The video had sparked an opposition backlash against the BJP government in the state. The case was registered 10 days after the video went viral.
