NSA slapped against Dr Kafeel Khan for inflammatory speech during Anti-CAA protests

Kafeel Khan, the doctor who was jailed after the death of over 60 children at Gorakhpur government hospital in 2017, has been slapped with National Security Act (NSA) over his alleged inflammatory speech during the anti-Citizenship Amendment Act protests at Aligarh Muslim University in December last year.

He was arrested by the UP Police on January 29 from Mumbai after an FIR, but was granted a bail on February 10. However, he was not released by the police  even after getting bail and was held in Mathura jail.

“We got to know today (Friday) morning that NSA has been slapped on Dr Kafeel and now will not be coming out of jail soon. This is simply unacceptable. He is being targeted at the behest of the state government,” Khan’s brother Adeel Khan alleged.

Chief Judicial Magistrate had sent a message to the jail on February 13 to expedite the release process, after the doctor’s family approached CJM Court in Aligarh over the delay in his release.

He was granted the bail after submitting a bail bond of Rs 60,000 with the condition of not repeating the crime again.

When he was arrested, Kafeel Khan was in Mumbai to take part in the protests against CAA.

Dr Khan was the nodal officer of BRD Medical College’s Department of Pediatrics. While in the immediate aftermath of the tragedy, Khan had been praised for his quick responsiveness in dealing with the situation, as attacks on the Yogi Adityanath government grew over the deaths.

But he was later arrested before an Uttar Pradesh government inquiry gave him clean chit last year.
