Rishi Sunak, who was newly appointed as United Kingdom Chancellor of the Exchequer, is an Indian-origin Conservative MP and a ‘first generation immigrant’.

Family:

Rishi Sunak was born in Southampton, Hampshire to Yashvir and Usha Sunak in 1980.

His parents migrated from East Africa to UK and his family originally hails from Punjab in India. Sunak’s father was a general practitioner (GP), and his mother was a pharmacist.

He is the eldest of three siblings.

Sunak is married to Infosys co-founder Narayana Murthy’s daughter Akshata Murthy.

Career:

He was earlier the director of investment firm Catamaran Ventures, which is owned by Narayana Murthy and has worked as an analyst for Goldman Sachs between 2001 and 2004.

With his investment banking experience, he co-founded a 1-billion pound global investment firm and specialised in investing in small British businesses before his entry into politics.

Political Career:

Sunak has been the Conservative MP for Richmond in Yorkshire since 2015. He was reelected in 2019 and has been representing the party at online debates on TV channels.

Sunak was appointed as Chief Secretary to the Treasury by Prime Minister Boris Johnson on 24 July 2019.

He was promoted to the post of Chancellor of the Exchequer on February 13 after the resignation of Pakistani-origin Conservative MP Sajid Javid from the post.

Education:

He completed his schooling from Winchester College, where he was the ‘head boy’.

Sunak then went to Oxford University to study Philosophy, Politics and Economics.

He went to Stanford University as a ‘Fullbright scholar’ to complete his MBA.
