#Kasganj ‘Fake News’: Police Say Reports of Threat to Chandan Gupta’s Father Incorrect

A day after major news agencies and TV news channels ran stories about threats received by the father of Chandan Gupta, the young man killed in Kasganj violence, some fresh reports run contrary to the news that was put out.

Trusting news agency reports, news organisations also ran stories of the threat to Chandan Gupta’s father and about police providing security to him in the wake of the threats.

While police personnel had been deployed at Chandan Gupta’s house immediately after he was killed – not after the alleged threat to his father – Kasganj Superintendent of Police (SP) Piyush Srivastav said that the news of the threat was fake. The SP had reportedly conveyed this to the senior functionaries of the news organisations.

A media report quoted Srivastav as saying, “It has been brought to our notice that some manipulation has taken place. We’ve also come to know that an individual from the media has forced (the father) to make that statement. We are probing that angle too. If anyone is found guilty, strict action will be taken against that person.”

The Kasganj SP, according to the media report, added, “I would like to request you that whenever you run any news (related to Kasganj), please also carry our official version. I’ve spoken to their (news channel that reported about the alleged threat) superiors in Delhi headquarter on this matter asking them to take action against him. We’ve also filed a report against him so that such episodes are not repeated.”

According to local correspondents, some reporters, including from a leading news agency, had arrived at Gupta’s house on Thursday night and requested him to make the statement regarding the threats to his life stating that this will help him get justice expeditiously. This was picked up by many news organisations on Friday morning.

Kasganj Fake News

Kasganj violence has been plagued with misleading or Fake News from the start.

First, it was made to appear as if violence was sparked off by pro-Pakistan Muslims who objected to a ‘Tiranga Yatra’ bike rally by patriotic ABVP-VHP activists on Republic Day.

The fact was that Muslims were celebrating Republic Day and were hoisting the National Flag. They were not raising any ‘Pakistan Zindabad’ slogans. The ABVP-VHP ‘Tiranga Yatra’, also reportedly carrying saffron flags entered the lane where this was happening and wanted their way cleared. They also demanded that the saffron flag be also hoisted and the Muslims sing ‘Vande Mataram’, raising provocative slogans like sending them to Pakistan.

The second fake news attributed malicious messages to Bollywood actor Farhan Akhtar about the violence.
