Within a week after anti-government protests erupted in Mashhad, the second largest city, millions of Iranians held pro-government nationwide demonstrations on second consecutive day on Thursday and denounced the recent wave of deadly unrest in different parts of the country.
The demonstrators flooded several cities and towns- including Mashhad, Isfahan and Shiraz. The participants of the demonstration were holding national flags and portraits of Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, the supreme leader. They were also shouting slogans against Israel, US and Saudi Arabia for their involvement in the divisive acts in the Country.
Similar Demonstrations were held in several cities on Wednesday. Tehran residents will be holding demonstration after Friday prayers on January 5.
Last Thursday, Mashhad witnessed the first protest against the economic conditions which were later spread several areas across the country. The participants suddenly changed their focus calling the removal of the present government. They even opposed Iran’s involvement in the regional conflicts.
However, the protests overshadowed when armed elements and vandals showed up among ordinary protesters and began to launch attacks on public property, police stations and religious sites. Within few days of protests over a dozen people were killed in the violence, according to state media reports.
US President Donald Trump posted a tweet supporting the protesters. The violence was also praised by Tel Aviv.
President Hassan Rouhani had accepted that people have right to protest for their issues but cannot vandalise public property.
Rouhani called his French counterpart Emmanuel Macron on Tuesday asking him to contain MKO terror organisation involved in inciting violence in the country.
Within two days of the anti-government protests, people supporting the present establishment came on the streets and shouted slogans against their enemies: US, Israel and Saudi Arabia for instigating violence in the country.
