Better late than never.
This was the comment made by some guests about the Christmas party hosted by the San Lorenzo Ruiz Group-Canton (SLRGC) last Jan. 5 at the Activity Center of the St. Thomas a’Becket church in Canton, Michigan.
Parish priest Fr. Chris Maus, delivering a brief remark that opened the celebration, explained that the party is not late at all because the Christmas season ends at midnight of Jan. 8.
Immediately after, the program took off with SLRGC leader Lee Vargas reading the script about the birth of Christ. The nativity was reenacted with young children playing various roles and wearing period outfits to portray the birth of the Baby Jesus at a stable in Bethlehem. The nativity scene was complete with children, who were dressed in immaculate white dresses, acting as angels.
The characters included the Three Kings who brought gifts and paid homage to the Infant Jesus who was sleeping in heavenly peace in a manger. It was, indeed, a holy spectacle.
The program turned merry and joyous when the participants and some adults sang Christmas songs such as “O, Little Town of Bethlehem,” “Silent Night,” “O, Holy Night,” “Hark the Herald,” “We the Three Kings,” and “The Drummer Boy.”
This was followed by the singing of Filipino Christmas songs that included “Himig ng Pasko,” “Ang Pasko Ay Sumapit,” “Noche Buena,” “Pasko na Naman,” and “Sa Maybahay.”
The Tagalog songs brought nostalgic memories to the elderly in the audience who had long missed Christmas celebration in our homeland, which was simply described as “very much different from Christmas here in the U.S.”
Then it was time for dinner. On the long table were favorite Filipino dishes such as lechon, dinuguan, menudo, lumpiang shanghai, laing, adobo, etc.
The after-dinner entertainment was impressive with the “Dance Moms” gyrating and spinning to the tune of “All I Want for Christmas Is You.”
Santa Claus came a little bit late, explaining that his trip was delayed because it was snowing hard in the North Pole.
The children had fun time receiving gifts and posing for pictures with Santa. The children were called by their names by Santa who told the kids that he is giving them gifts because they have been good boys and girls the whole year.
The success of the event came as a result of the hard work done by SLRGC members led by Lee Vargas.
