Rhebenn “Ben” Torres, a Filipino-American, is something of a Renaissance man when it comes to Financial roles. During his career at GM and before, Ben has done a little bit of everything including financial planning and analysis, controls, assurance, accounting policy analysis, compliance, controllership, lean and project management, lean and continuous improvement.

He is also a certified public accountant (CPA) with experience in both public and private accounting.

As a senior financial analyst on the GBS Purchasing Services’ RTP and SAP team, Ben plays an important part in the overall alignment, transparency, Business Strategy success and results of his department.

“I mainly support business leaders in the GBS Purchasing Services space in terms of budget and forecast, headcount and migration initiatives,” Ben says. “I conduct regional reviews (GMNA, GME, GMIO, GMSA) on a monthly basis to ensure alignment of business strategy and results. As a Lean practitioner at GM, I also continue to improve critical business processes and eliminate waste and support a lean environment.”

Ben says that the highlight of working in GBS is his collaboration with people on his team.

“I enjoy the people and the leaders that I interact with on a day-to-day basis, and I love working for my group,” he says. “They are very nice, approachable and very supportive. My director is by far the most patient and the best coach ever. I have learned so much from her.”

Ben joined GBS in early 2014 after working for Bosch Automotive Service Solutions in Warren, Michigan. Before that, his work in the Greater Detroit area spanned roles in assurance, controllership, financial accounting and auditing.

In 2001, Ben moved to the U.S. from the Philippines. His hometown is Iligan City on the southern island of Mindanao. He speaks Hiligaynon, which is a native language in Mindanao, in addition to English and Tagalog (the national language of the Philippines).

Away from work, Ben likes to travel mostly on the weekends in the U.S. and Canada. This year he will be visiting his home in the Philippines for the first time in many years.

“I haven’t been home since 2006, so it’s been 11 years! I am very excited,” he says.

In the spirit of giving back to his homeland, Ben, who is still single, has a Scholarship Program that benefit 25 kids at Kiwalan Elementary School in Iligan City. “I add five scholars every year as five scholars graduated every year as well,” he said.

He launched his scholarship program in the Philippines 10 years ago. “This is my way of giving back to the community and paying it forward since I was also a product of a scholarship program back when I was in the Philippines,” Ben told the Filipino Star News.
