National Blues Museum Traveling Exhibition
ST LOUIS, MO/January 8, 2017 (STL.News) Women of the Blues – For as far back as we can remember, gifted artists have been singing the Blues. This genre and musical form originated by African Americans in the Deep South at the end of the 19th century. Blues is a combination of spirituals, work songs, field hollers, shouts, chants, and rhymed simple narrative ballads.
There are very few forms of American music that can claim a history as long, as tradition-rich, and as complex as the Blues. It has had a deep, profound influence on jazz or folk, country or pop, rock or rap because it has always expressed emotional, heartfelt truths about life. These truths speak to generations of listeners from all walks of society.
St. Louisans will now have the opportunity to learn more about female Blues legends thanks to The National Blues Museum. They are hosting their latest traveling exhibition, which is the amazing “Women of the Blues: A Coast-to-Coast Collection.” This unique exhibit introduces 60 photographs of ‘Women of the Blues’ of all ages and ethnic backgrounds.
The photographs are the artistic expression of fourteen distinct photographers from around the world sharing their extremely moving and powerful images of these extraordinary women. The images include artists like, Mavis Staples and Susan Tedeschi (Grammy winning rock blues icon) to Chicago’s Southern soul blues diva, Nellie ‘Tiger’ Travis, the newly crowned Queen of the Blues, Shemekia Copeland, and many more.
The remarkable free exhibit is dedicated, in tribute, to Koko Taylor’s foundation, Sisters of Royalty.
