The 2016 presidential campaigns are in the works and a key event, the first presidential Debate, recently took place. During the debate, both Hillary and Trump had their ups and downs. They agreed on some topics but for the most part had widely different views. Some highlights of the debate included discussion on tax plans, the formation of jobs, racial divide, securing America, and the outcome of the election.
As far as taxes go, Hillary wants to raise the tax on the wealthy and Trump wants to cut them in general. While the option you would want seems clear, there are reasons why each of them has these opinions. Trump wants to cut taxes so that big businesses can stop outsourcing and create more jobs here in America. Hillary’s reasoning for raising taxes on the wealthy is that they should pay a more equivalent percentage of their income to give back.
One of the few topics that Hillary and Trump agreed on in any aspect was securing our country. While their beliefs did not match up entirely, they did both agree that nuclear power was a concern to them. Aside from nuclear power, there was much talk about the “Stop and Frisk” initiative that New York once used. While it was eventually found unconstitutional, Trump argued that it helped to decrease crime rates in New York while instated. Hillary argued the unconstitutional part of it and made the point that the decrease in crime during that time can not be completely accredited to that initiative.
Immigration has become a very hot topic during this election year because of the strong opinions on it. Trump would like to increase border control and try to enable more U.S. citizens to have jobs currently held by immigrants here illegally.
The debate was eventful and certainly one of the most entertaining debates that we’ve had up to this point. However, throughout the debate, Trump made multiple accusations and comments towards Hillary that could neither be supported or proven. This had negative effects towards the public and popular view of Trump as a credible source of information. Particularly, at one point, Trump was clearly upstaged by a response from Hillary after he said: “She doesn’t have the stamina to be president”. Hillary responded with, “As soon as he travels to 112 countries and negotiates a peace deal, a cease-fire, a release of dissidents, an opening of new opportunities in nations around the world, or even spends 11 hours testifying in front of a congressional committee he can talk to me about stamina” , which silenced Trump.
While overall the debate was informative of the candidate’s views; certain strengths and weaknesses were revealed by both Trump and Hillary. What can be expected in the next debate?
