At the end of December 2016 I went with family on a trip from Sydney to Melbourne and the Great Ocean Road. For much more photos than on this blog post about my journey to the Great Ocean Road go check out my Instagram account.

Kiama Little Blow Hole
We started the journey on the 24th of December 2016 and our first stop was the Kiama Blow Hole, NSW.

Merimbula

We only stopped for the night at Merimbula and I had a bit of time to take some photos while we were there. The photo above I took at a beach nearby. I set up my tripod and took a few long exposure while the sun was setting. After the sun had set the most beautiful photos started flowing in.
We stayed at the Norfolk Pine Hotel in Merimbula and on the grass behind the rooms were some Kangaroo. I used my Canon 100-400mm to get a few Kangaroo photos. They were fairly tame and I was able to get close enough for a great photo of a friendly Kangaroo.

Melbourne
Our next stop where we spent a few days was Melbourne. More on that in another blog post. We stayed at Quest Flemington for 3 days before we set off to the Great Ocean Road.

The Great Ocean Road
On the Great Ocean Road we stopped at The Twelve Apostles, Erskine Fall, Teddy’s Lookout, Lorne Beach and a few other places. We drove inland to find accommodation with the first night at Colac. We drove to Ballarat and spent the night there before heading back to Sydney.
The Twelve Apostles
The Twelve Apostles was amazing. We also went to the Londons Bridge rock formation. I learnt a bit of history on the journey and a few interesting stories.
The first photo of the blog post is at the Twelve Apostles and was taken with a long exposure using an ND filter. I liked using a 10 stop ND filter to get a long exposure but at the end of the day the ND filter destroys the colour in the photo. I ended up mostly using the photos taken without the 10 stop ND filter.
It was a bit cloudy at times having some advantages but also some disadvantages when taking photos. Luckily the sun 🌞 came out later in the day and I got the best of both.
There was a lot of tourists at the Twelve Apostles making it slightly difficult to take photos at times but between all the people and flies I managed to get a couple of photos.

Lorne
After the Twelve Apostles we went to Lorne. A town next to the ocean that attracts a lot of tourists. We stopped at the beach and spend some time there. I took a nice long exposure of the waves crashing on the rocks.

Erskine Falls
A few kilometres away from the ocean close to Lorne is Erskine Falls. We went there and hiked a few kilometres to the big waterfall. I again used a long exposure to capture the motion of the waterfall. The waterfall is much more impressive than the photo can convey. You feel small when you are close to the waterfall.

Teddy's Lookout
We went to a lookout point called Teddy’s Lookout in Lorne. I was really impressed with the lookout. It had a nice panoramic view of the Great Ocean Road. I took a few nice photos.
As you can probably notice by now, I like using a long exposure. It just makes the photo ten times better. I also took a panorama to capture the whole view. From the panorama image you can clearly see what a wide view the lookout had.

Ballarat
On our way back to Sydney we stopped at Ballarat for a day. It is a nice town not too far from Melbourne. You can take a train at Ballarat and be in Melbourne in just more than an hour. The town is well known for Gold mining.

We stopped at Albury for New Years and from there went to Sydney. It was a fun journey and I took plenty photos. Check out the galleries section for more photos and Instagram.
