The Yellow-vented Bulbul, scientifically known as Pycnonotus goiavier, is a member of the bulbul family of passerine birds. Locally known here as "Merbah Kapur". The male and female looks the same, so it is not easy to differentiate the gender differences except during nesting. This is a hard Bird to miss. They are everywhere, in the city to the gardens and parks. But they are not found at all in the deep forests.

February here is the breeding season for most birds. This is tied in to the flowering of the fruiting trees, where insects will be in abundant as a source of food for them. The bulbul species eat small fruits and insects in their diet.

The pictures above are from my home. There are several nests around my garden that I am keeping my attention to. The chicks do grow fast. They were  leaving the nest in a about 3 weeks after hatching.

The photos of the nest, eggs and the chicks are shot using the Sigma 150mm macro lens, handheld with a fill in flash to eliminate the shadows from the leaves.

Equipments:
  • Sigma 50-500mm zoom lens
  • Sigma 150mm macro lens
  • Tripod
  • Flash
