It's certainly something that is quite unique about the UK and something that does set it apart from lots of other countries around the world.
Sure, most places have places that sell alcohol, but the UK has turned this into an art form over the years and the social nature of drinking was firmly embedded into everyday life.
The villages and towns of the UK often have more Pubs than most other types of buildings and Standish, to the north of Wigan is no different.
Three of the most striking are now shown below, but this is by no means all of them, quite incredible really.
The Globe - a really familiar pub on the main road through the village and stands right next to the war memorial and its little garden.
The Lychgate - closer to the largest church in the village, the pub has changed hands a few times over recent years, but always seems to carry on in some form or other.
The Black Bull - right in the heart of the village, close to the cross roads and just round the corner from the Lychgate - always a very popular place.
You will never be thirsty or short of a place to rest your feet in Standish - all welcome !!!
