How To Stop Dog Urine From Killing & Burning Grass: 3 Simple Steps

For the health and appearance of your Lawn, it’s good to know everything you can about how to stop Dog Urine from killing Grass.

Not only does it pay to know how you can bring back dead grass from dog urine, but it’s useful to know options for prevention i.e. how to stop a dog peeing on lawn in the first place.

In this guide we explore both prevention and treatment options for your grass.

A few notes before we get started:

  • The reason dog urine kills grass is because of an over concentration of nitrogen compounds in the spot your dog pees which burns your grass (same as putting too much fertiliser in one spot of grass), usually leaving yellow patches behind. It’s nothing to do with the ph level of urine or its acidity.
  • Always get professional advice from professionals before applying any chemicals to your lawn – the guide below is informational and educational only
  • You can read the following related guides – how to stop your dog from peeing on the lawn, and how to eliminate pee and poop odors in your yard and on your lawn

Let’s jump into it…

How To Stop Dog Urine From Killing & Burning Grass: 3 Simple Steps

Step 1. Make Sure Your Dog & Your Lawn Is Healthy

In general, a dog’s pee shouldn’t be so overpowering in smell that it makes you sick or gag. If the smell is really overpowering, you might:

  • Make sure your dog is drinking enough water so their urine is naturally more diluted
  • Make sure your dog has a balanced diet (is getting a balance of nutrients) and is eating properly. Note that high protein diets can cause a higher concentration of nitrogen in your dog’s pee
  • Doesn’t have some sort of health condition or infection

Pay attention and monitor each of these things, and see your vet if you want to make sure everything is OK from a health perspective.

Feeding Your Dog Tomato Juice For Dog Urine Killing Grass

Some people have reported feeding their dog tomato juice which in turn changes the pH balance of their dog’s urine to make it less acidic.

It’s an over concentration of nitrogen that kills the grass, not the pH of the urine.

The best way to make sure your dog’s urine is healthy and normal is to make sure they are drinking enough clean water, and to see a vet for their professional advice of whether your dog is healthy, and whether it’s worth altering their diet.

Apple Cider Vinegar For Dog Urine Killing Grass

The same principle applies for apple cider vinegar as for tomato juice.

Make sure your dog is getting enough clean water, and see a vet for professional advice about health and diet.

Make Sure Your Lawn Is Healthy

Are you sure it’s your dog or someone else’s dog causing your lawn to die?

It could actually be that the lawn has some sort of lawn disease. A dead giveaway that you have a lawn disease is that the grass is not firmly rooted/easily collapses.

Step 2. How To Stop/Prevent A Dog Peeing On Grass

It’s understandable you might get fed up with your dog peeing on your grass, but your dog has to have SOMEWHERE to pee outside.

If you don’t want your dog to pee on your grass, that’s fine – as long as you have another area they can feel comfortable peeing, like a nearby soil patch or garden patch.

We wrote a more in depth guide on how to stop your dog from peeing on your lawn, but as a summary, you may try any of the following ideas:

  • A real disposable patch of grass you train your dog to pee on like the DoggieLawn Disposable Dog Potty Real Grass Patch (on Amazon). Although they can be expensive if you are replacing them every week or second week compared to monthly for example
  • Citronella oil has been known to repel dogs – and repelling them from peeing is no exception. Mix citronella oil like NOW citronella oil (on Amazon) with water in a spray bottle, and spray your grass with it evenly. You should only need to re-spray it every few weeks. Make sure it’s all natural citronella oil (extracted from citronella grass) so it doesn’t harm your lawn or dog
  • A fence around the grass
  • A motion activated sprinkler system
  • Switch to a plant based fertiliser for your lawn as opposed to blood, fish, and bone meal based fertilisers
  • Use an ultra sonic repellant
  • Spray a spray dog repellant around the outside of the lawn
  • Train your dog to pee on another area
  • Spray vinegar around the perimeter (not on the lawn)

And, these are some methods that people try to use to prevent dogs urinating on grass, which don’t tend to deliver great results:

  • The little yellow pee posts – such as the Simple Solution Pee Post (on Amazon)
  • An artificial grass patch of grass you train your dog to pee on like the PetSafe Pet Loo Portable Pet Potty (on Amazon). They tend to be hard/unhygenic to clean, and some dogs don’t like the artificial grass feel
  • Dog Rocks (on Amazon) are like a natural purifier for your dog’s water. They are natural rocks you put in your dog’s water that remove Tin, Ammonia and Nitrates from your dog’s water, which in theory makes your dog’s pee less likely to burn the grass. It is after all primarily an overdose of nitrates that kills the grass.
  • Baking soda also tends to be ineffective

The above tips are also handy if for some reason if your neighbor’s dog is peeing or pooping on your lawn (if you live on shared property for example), and you want to prevent them from doing so.

3. Treatment of Lawn With Dog Urine On It

How To Stop Dog Urine From Killing Grass Naturally, Home Remedies

When it comes to stopping your dog’s urine from killing grass naturally, the best long term solutions seem to be:

  • Train or deter your dog from peeing on the lawn and get them to pee on a dirt patch, gravel areas or in the garden instead (read article about how to stop a dog peeing on grass)
  • Use an organic fertiliser to provide more nutrients/mineral for your grass ot repair and re grow, and water it regularly. Be aware though that if you are overloading your grass with nitrogen from fertiliser and pee in any one spot, it can cause the lawn to burn. So, be careful of that.
  • Some people like to use an organic dolomite lime on their lawn and garden which can also helps with health of the grass. This can help for a speedy re grow
  • When you take your dog out to pee in the morning and night, take a jug of water with you, and immediately dilute the area of pee by pouring the water on it.
  • Consider using different more resistant grasses to dog urine. Some people say that Fescues and perennial rye grasses take longer to show damage from dog urine and will recover more quickly when damaged.

The first rule of applying anything to your grass is to make sure it’s natural and organic.

There’s two main reasons for this –

  • So it doesn’t harm any humans or animals
  • So it doesn’t kill or damage your grass further

Examples of natural remedies that ARE NOT a good idea for using directly on grass are:

  • Vinegar – a natural herbicide and weed killer – it can kill grass and plants.
  • Peppers or chilli powder – don’t use this – it can kill grass and plants.
  • Ammonia/bleach
  • Baking Soda
  • Coffee grounds, moth balls, garlic power, Tobacco, and detergents

How To Bring Back Dead Grass From Dog Urine

Once the grass is dead, there isn’t a heck of a lot you can do. It won’t grow back immediately overnight.

You need to be providing your grass with a sustainable long term solution that helps both re-grow the grass, and keep it strong with plenty of minerals.

Your best options in this instance might be to:

  • Prevent the behavior that is causing the grass to go dead – is using a disposable grass patch, or installing a small patch (hire a landscaper) for your dog to pee on instead of your lawn an option?
  • Make sure your grass/lawn is being watered regularly and consider an organic fertiliser or spot gone treatment which provides balanced amounts of nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium to help the grass grow better
  • Consider an organic lime for your lawn to help with lawn health

Do Dog Rocks Work?

They work for some people, but for most people they report no difference.

Dog rocks are designed to be a natural water filter/purifier for your dog’s water.

We wouldn’t rely solely on dog rocks to solve our dog urine/grass problems.

Does Spot Gone Lawn Treatment Work For Dog Urine?

Spot gone lawn treatment is designed to be either sprinkled or sprayed on the area where your dog pees.

It is supposed to supply minerals for lawn growth to allow it the best chance to recover and regrow quickly from grass burn.

The results for most spot gone lawn treatments are inconsistent at best.

You might be better off trying an organic fertiliser or lime powder, with a regular dose of watering.
