"What a fantastic sight," said Chris Packham on air. It certainly was, and so was the close up of its one-week-old chick. The mother won't leave the chick as her priority is now to protect it from predation and one would think it would be safe from predation on a precipice, but it's not - pine martins can still access it, apparently. Our bird gardens may not offer the drama of Puffins breeding on Farne Island (unless you live in Farne Island) but they do offer a natural canvass upon which we can help nature paint a more positive picture of its future. How do we do that? We provide food, fresh water, shelter and a place to breed and nature takes the reins from there. Plant native trees and hedges and they'll -in time - host a city of invertebrates, and these will provide more 'natural' food and enrichment, triggered off to coincide with the breeding season.

Each of us plays host to an all season watch; however, right now, outside in our gardens, nature's inviting you to play your part and to protect it. They say that impersonation is the greatest form of flattery, and we think the Springwatch team would be blown away by the efforts each one of us goes to feed wildlife and create our own spring/summer/autumn/winterWatch. Nature is ours – we are all inextricably linked with nature.
