Generally, Pomeranians are a quite healthy breed and can live their expected life expectancy. However, there are some Common Health Problems that trouble Pomeranians. We are listing these common health problems not to scare you but to keep you well informed, so that you can be a better parent to your Pomeranian. Here are 4 common health problems in Pomeranians.
1. Tracheal Collapse
It can cause in the blockage of airway in the dogs. Trachea or windpipe is a tube via which air travels to and from the lungs. A Pomeranian’s neck is quite delicate and tugging on their neck collar over a long period of time can result in a collapsed tracheal. It is recommended to use a shoulder collar/leash to walk your Pomeranian. Dogs that are overweight are at a higher risk of Tracheal collapse. So ensure that your dog gets its regular exercise and diet.
The cases of Tracheal collapse can be treated with cough suppressants, bronchodilators to control infection or antibiotics. For an overweight dog, losing weight is suggested.
2. Patellar Luxation
This is a very common problem with Pomeranians. Their kneecap (patella) gets dislocated from its position. Their thigh bone gets affected and is quite painful. This is one of the reasons why you could see your dog holding up their hind legs for a few minutes. Female Pomeranians are 11/2 times more likely to suffer from this condition.
An x-ray is done of the joint, hip and hock to detect the severity of the condition and to check for bending/twisting of the joints. A fluid sample is taken from the joint and analyzed to help treat the issue. A veterinarian also performs an examination to feel the kneecap freedom and whether the dislocation can be fixed without any intricate procedure.
3. Eye Problems
Pomeranian breed usually suffer the most due to eye problems. Their long eyelashes causes discomfort and strain their eyes while trying to see. The eyelashes that do trouble the eyes by poking them can be easily removed via electrolysis procedure. The recovery time is quite less and dogs usually recover very fast after the procedure.
Another common disorder in Pomeranian breed! This disorder is quite visible as you can see cloudy eyes or redness or swelling around their eyes. This disorder compromises their vision and most likely can lead to blindness if not treated early. Get your dog’s eyes checked every 3-4 months, or if you see any symptoms. Catching the problem early and getting the right treatment can save your dog from going blind.
