How to Pick a Dog

The Why Factor

Have you considered how to choose your dog, or dog breed? Many canine lovers often act on impulse, instead of using rational thought to make a decision.  Is it just about having a Companion without the emotional burden? Or are you simply looking for a pet you can furnish with love? While there are many reasons people decide to own a dog, a few factors need to be determined before making a decision.

The Money Factor

Although it’s understandable to opt for a breed of dog you may have seen at a friend’s house, or in the movies, you should hold back before making a commitment.  A case-in-point is the Disney movie ‘101 Dalmatians.’ The movie proved to be so popular, that children globally were keen to own a real-life dalmatian.

As a result, as the dogs matured, dalmatian owners often found themselves fraught with a number of financial obligations and household mishaps that weren’t anticipated. This alone is enough to show that choosing a dog should be a well-informed decision, and not one based on emotion alone.

The cost of owning a dog can be dependent on a number of different factors. For example, a greyhound very rarely causes any upset around the house. However, there could be a cost implication. The same can be said for many other breeds, as some need more attention in certain areas than others, meaning that making a decision purely based on emotion could be detrimental to you financially in the future.

The Love Factor

Of course, budget isn’t the be-all and end-all for everyone, some may be more than comfortable with their current lifestyle, and as such, wish to invest in a companion. In this regard, you should focus on the main reason on why you are purchasing the dog. There is no right or wrong answer, but if you’re looking for a dog to shower with affection, and have that affection reciprocated, then it makes sense to understand what you expect from your dog, and what the dog can expect from you.

Research carried out over the last few years has shown that dogs hold more human characteristics than previously thought.  As such, an owner must be able to form a bond with the dog, but in a positive manner.

The ownership of a dog should allow you to portray your emotions in a positive way. Many dog owners are believed to be highly-loving and nurturing individuals, and this is because both the dog and its owner know what to expect from each other, with both parties still able to rub shoulders with others. Owning a dog should not lead an owner into a feeling of inward isolation. This is often where the owner looks up the dog as a companion, but neither the owner or the dog has contact with others, often leading the dog to become the owner’s only companion.

Showering a dog with love may seem like a no-brainer, but it’s to dismiss a dog as another part of the furniture. Selecting a dog that provides its owners with love, while getting the same in return, can only have a positive effect on the household, as well as introducing children to responsibility.
