5 Fun Facts About Hedgehogs

Even though you can’t cuddle the cute critters, they’re becoming increasingly popular as pets. They’re small, cute, and totally lovable, but how much do you really know about Hedgehogs? Check out these 5 quick facts:

1.) Hedgehogs are primarily independent, solitary animals and only come together to mate. However, a group of hedgehogs is called an Array.

2.) There are 17 species of Hedgehog.

3.) Hedgehogs have poor eyesight. This results in their dependency on hearing and smell. Despite their poor sight, their sight is best in the dark as an adaption to their nocturnal lifestyle.

4.) Hedgehogs have between 5,000 and 7,000 Quills. These quills located on their back can be raised and lowered to respond to threatening situations. The quills are hollow with complex air chambers that make them light but strong. Unliked Porcupine quills, Hedgehog quills are not poisonous.

5.) Hedgehogs got their name from the pig-like grunts they make and Garden Hedges they prefer to live in. Garden hedges are their preferred environment as they have a taste for insects.
