Turkish Angora Cat: Getting To Know The Pristine And Elegant Feline

If you have already fallen in love with unique features and personality of a Persian Cat, the Turkish Angora could well be your next favourite, with an oriental twist to their existing luxurious feel.

The Turkish Angora Cat

Native to the Ankara Region of Turkey, Turkish Angora Cats are also fondly known as Ankara Cat.  The earliest documentation of a Turkish Angora Cat was dated the 17thcentury, similarly gaining recognition during the same period in Europe— importing of long-haired Cats to Britain and France occurred as early as the 16th century.

Fun Fact #1      A breeding program was started within the Ankara Zoo in Turley, in order to preserve pure-bred white Turkish Angoras— they particularly favoured odd-eyed Angoras.

The process of breeding a Persian and Turkish Angora Cat was very common then, and Turkish Angoras were often confused with Persian Cats— an increased number of Flat-faced (Peke) Persian Cats soon divided the two as separate breeds. Turkish Angoras were also known to be priced possessions of Marie Antoinette, as were the giant Cat breed Maine Coon.

Fun Fact #2      Turkish Angora Cats came close to extinction from excessive breeding, with the sole purpose of improving the quality of Persian Cats' coats.

The first Turkish Angora was brought to Canada in 1963 and recognized by the CFA (Cat Fanciers' Association), and only as a Pedigree Breed a decade later. Until 1978, only White Angora Cats were accepted in show rings. Today, Angora Cats in all colours and patterns are permitted to participate.

Fun Fact #3      Till today, Turkish breeders believe that the common Angoras now do not carry similar standards to a pure-bred with sturdier built from Turkey.

Size — This is a medium sized Cat breed, the average weight of an adult Turkish Angora ranges from 2 to 4 kgs.

Colours — Turkish Angoras are best known for their coats that shimmer in the light, in colours such as Tabby White, Black with Brown undercoat, Tabby, and also Smoke variants.

Coats — The Turkish Angora Cat sports an unmistakably long, silky, luxurious looking coats on elegant bodies, much like a lady in fine clothing.

Features — A Turkish Angora’s eyes are almond shaped. Usually in Blue, Green, Amber, Yellow or Heterochromatic (Odd-eyed). Atop their heads sit large pointed ears. The body finishes with a long plumed tail, which sits upright.

Fun Fact #4     Blue Eyes are caused by a gene which may indicate that the Angora Cat is deaf, but this does not inflict any other health problems. Most Angoras that are deaf still lead a normal life, due to their intelligence and love of human interaction.

Grooming A Turkish Angora

Unlike most long-haired Cat breeds, the coat of a Turkish Angora is surprisingly easy to groom. This is because they only have a single coat of silky fur that rarely mats or tangle up. However, brushing them at least twice a week and a bath once in two months is still necessary in maintaining their luscious fur and coat hygiene.

Practice good oral hygiene by brushing their teeth with a Vet-approved toothpaste. Keep their ears and eyes clean by using a Vet-approved cleanser and cotton balls— dry completely after. Nails should be clipped when they get too long.

If you are unsure how to perform these tasks for your Pet, approach a trusted Groomer or Veterinarian for professional help!

Turkish Angora Cat Personality

You are looking at a playful, intelligent, and active Cat that loves human attention. If you love Cats with Dog like characteristics, Turkish Angoras are also said to be one of the few breeds with those traits. Spending time with them appeases their love for human bonding. Their desire to please and willingness to help their human counterparts allows easy training. While highly sociable, a Turkish Angora can grow selective on their one-favourite human companion and become protective of them.

A happy Angora home should be furnished with plenty of high perches (i.e. Cat Shelves and Cat Condos)— if you want them to avoid your furniture. An elegant Cat as such should also be housed indoors, and windows should be meshed, especially with their tendency to jump and rest on high grounds. Due to their playful nature and possibly short attention span, they could be rather stubborn for some people.  They are adaptable to a noisy, busy household too!

Fun Fact #5      There is no furniture too high for a Turkish Angora to act as a watch tower— some owners have also reported that their Angora Cats actually favour sitting on their shoulders from time to time.
